In any review of history of the British Royal Navy, the story of one
particular ship stands out as one deserving special mention. This vessel is
the HMS Prince of Wales, the second member of the famous King George V class of
battleships from the Second World War era. This battleship had a very brief,
but very active service life, which has gained for this ship an indelible place
in the history of the modern capital ship. Her service with Fleet only spanned
nine months, but within this period she managed to participate in one major
surface battle, convey Prime Minister Winston Churchill to an important
conference, perform convoy protection duties in the Mediterranean, and finally
help comprise the core of "Force Z." Britian's deterrent to possible Japanese
expansion into her sphere of influence in the Far East.
